I thought you were supposed to be less busy in the winter? I have enough projects going to keep me busy until it warms up for sure…
The latest thing I have going on is my fodder setup. I have it in my garage and I’m facing the issue of keeping a warm enough environment for it to grow as fast as needed. I’ll share some specs:
- I’m using roasting pans as containers with holes poked in the bottom (the disposable ones)
- I’m using untreated barley as the seed
- I’m watering by hand 2-3 times a day for now but I’m going to hook up a pump on a timer soon.
- My grass that’s on it’s 6th day is only a little over an inch tall and it’s not sprouting until about day 3-4 :-/
I’m also getting my hydroponics setup running again. I was using expanded clay pellets but could never get it working right due to pH issues and sediment coming off the pebbles (even after rinsing countless times!) I’m now using rock wool so we’ll see if that is better. I’ll be adding the nutrient solution and seeds this weekend.
We’re starting to put together our raised beds for this spring. Something that’s cool about this is that we’re going to institute hugelculture techniques with our raised beds! Long story short, we’re adding a lot of wood to the beds before we fill with compost and topsoil. The wood breaks down over time releasing nutrients into the bed. The wood also wicks and holds moisture for the beds.
There’s a few other things that are in the works but that’s enough for now.
I know I need to get pictures up and I do plan on doing that! I just need some time to get it set up the way I want. Time is hard to come by though!
