It’s been raining for a week here and there’s no end in sight. My chicken run is a mess! I want to open up a new section just so they have somewhere to go that’s not walking in the mud all day. I haven’t done any research on this but in anyone else’s experience, is it bad for their feet to be muddy all day? They have places to go to get out of the rain but not to get out of the mud! I also don’t want to spread their “scratch” feed out when it’s just going to sink in the mud…. what to do, what to do….
It’s having an impact on the eggs too. They are definitely more “muddy” than usual. Muddy is in parenthesis there in the hopes that it’s only mud on them but know it’s not. My nesting boxes are in a position to stay relatively clean but I guess the mamas just walking around is making them somewhat gross.
So, do you clean your eggs? I know a lot of people say you don’t need to clean or refrigerate the eggs and that cleaning the wrong way could actually push bacteria into your egg. BUT, there’s mental roadblocks to keeping the eggs on the counter when there’s more than enough room in the fridge! AND THEN, when you’re putting stuff in the fridge with mud and poop on it, that’s just gross!! 🙂 So, I think we’ve resorted to gently wiping the eggs with a green scrubby and lightly rinsing afterward. After that, we put them in the fridge. So, what’s your routine? or do you even have one?
A side note: I’ve received a lot of feedback saying that pictures would be good. They are definitely coming soon! Fall is here so more free time is coming! 🙂 So adding pictures to the site will come along with the additional free time.
